Serratus anterior muscle palsy

The serratus anterior is innervated by the long thoracic nerve (nerve of Bell). This muscle is the main motor of the scapulothoracic joint, it gives the scapula its mobility.

Paralysis of this muscle results in severe shoulder weakness and winged scapula (scapula alata).

Recovery is sometimes spontaneous. In any event, if no signs of recovery are visible after 5 months, exploration and release surgery is required.

For injuries diagnosed late (over one year), transfer procedure of the partial pectoralis major tendon can be an option.
